Many of us enjoy a break from our daily routine and those in our care are no different. International Volunteer Taryn Herriot shares what they got up to during their three day activity break.
‘The first day was just for the girls and we started out with a morning of pampering. They took turns to have a hair wash and a manicure. They were so excited to show off their newly painted nails, and see themselves in the mirror when the hairdresser finished styling their hair. These types of activities emphasize to the girls that they’re important and worthy of being treated with respect.
After lunch we went to the cinema. Out of all of the activities thirty two year old Li Qiao said, “I enjoyed watching the movie the most because I don’t usually get to go the cinema.”
The next day we took the boys to see a movie and after lunch, we went down the street for an afternoon of karaoke. Twenty two year old Su Duan explained, “My favourite activity was karaoke because I really like singing.” It was great to see the boys who love to sing in their element. Even the caregivers got involved!
On the last day we took everybody to the local aquarium in the morning. It was a great chance for them to see all of the exhibits, including one of our International Volunteers scuba diving in a fish tank during a performance! We ate lunch while watching the seals and then headed off to the museum for the afternoon.’
It’s encouraging to hear that everyone had such a good time. We’re very grateful for people Like Taryn who make such activities possible. If you’d like to become one of our International Volunteers and help China’s abandoned and disabled live full and active lives, contact us today.
