An old proverb says that ‘a problem shared is a problem halved’. There’s some truth in that. Being allowed to express our concerns and have them listened to in a safe environment is really important to our well being. Recently we held our first parent support group meeting in Changsha. Community Outreach manager Sam Hills tells us more:
‘Eight parents came to the meeting. Their children have a range of disabilities and are aged from 3 to 19 years old. As they introduced themselves they began to make suggestions regarding treatments and medical assessments to one another. After a presentation about teaching new skills to children with disabilities I turned the time over to the parents so they could chat and get to know each other better. I was really encouraged that they carried on talking for about an hour, sharing ideas and experiences.’
Through the work of Sam and Community Outreach eight families have begun to receive much needed support. They’ve been given a safe place to share their worries and frustrations and they know there are people who will help them as they care for their children.
Do you have a heart for abandoned and disabled children in China? Could you get involved and help support families who need a place where they can be heard? Contact us to find out how.
