Joss Delves-Broughton, a member of our most recent China Team, shares his story.
‘Working with the small boys turned out to be the most rewarding two weeks of my life. I worked alongside Darryl Conroy who gave me great strength and encouragement. Together we were known as the Granddads. There were nine boys in our group and by the end of the two weeks it was easy to identify their very different personalities. They all loved to be cuddled and I prayed that they’d sense the love of the good Lord through our embraces.
When we arrived each morning the older boys hot footed it back to the little boys to herald our arrival, so that when we entered the room we were greeted by a big cheer. That cheer was worth a million dollars!
There are so many memories I will cherish and I miss the boys and long to return.’
China Teams Coordinator John Cooper adds:
‘Every day I popped my head round the door of the little boys’ room to see the children playing and laughing with their two adopted Granddads. To see Joss and Darryl holding and sometimes crying over the boys was very touching.
We go to China to be Jesus to these children. Sometimes that means being a friend, a father, a mother, and in this case two big, lovable Granddads who were greeted every day by a million dollar cheer.’
