Busy and Blessed

International Volunteer Sam Hills says:

‘Summer’s been a busy time in China with camps running throughout July and August. I went to spend a week with the 6 to10 year olds and must admit I was a little reluctant as I pictured a week of hard work in the hot sun, conducting crowd control for over-excited little ones, changing nappies, taking kids to the toilet and worrying about their safety at a campsite surrounded by lakes.

All of these things proved to be unimportant and I was greatly blessed by the experience. My biggest blessing was working with Zeng Fang. He is 8 years old, blind and a very cute little chatter-box. Initially he was terrified of getting in the water but after some coaxing I took him into the swimming pool. Each day he became braver, wading deeper and splashing around. I realised I could distract him from his fear by singing, and while singing the camp song “We all go exploring together” he decided he wanted to lie on his back in the water. Little by little and with lots of help he relaxed so much that by the last day he was all but floating on his back by himself. Such a small thing perhaps, but for him it required courage to face his fear and place his trust in someone else; something all of us need to be reminded of from time to time.’

Would you like to experience one of our camps? Join our China Team beginning July 2008 and you can help children like Zeng Fang to learn and grow.
